The
following is a list of major scholarships international students can apply for
before arriving in Japan.

for International Students (University of Tokyo Fellowship) - Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
or Monbukagakusho) Scholarship - Embassy recommendation

Panasonic Scholarship - Monthly scholarship:
- Applicant must be able to enroll in a postgraduate masters course
at a Japanese university after unofficial selection for the scholarship - Open
to those who wish to specialize in scientific or technological fields - Scholarship for application through a supervising professor
of the University of Tokyo
Yoshida Scholarship Foundation Asia 100 - Monthly scholarship (up to 2 years) : 150,000 yen
- Open to applicants
in Asian countries who wish to study in Japan - Applicant must be able to
obtain admission to the University of Tokyo before arriving in Japan - Applicant
must be a postgraduate student enrolled in a masters or doctors course (As is
the case with 2. (2) above, application must be made through a prospective supervising
professor.)
Monthly research
grant: 150,000 yen
The University of Tokyo offers
a program to provide a research grant to privately financed international students
with an excellent academic record. For details, please refer to the website below

Monthly scholarship
Undergraduate students:134,000

Research students : 172,000 yen
This
is a category where applications are made through the Japanese Embassy or Consular
Office outside Japan. In order to be selected for this category, an applicant
must pass a preliminary examination conducted by the Japanese Embassy or Consular
Office in cooperation with the host countrys government. For details, please refer
to the website below and contact the Japanese Embassy or Consular Office concerned.
Japanese Government scholarship students selected through embassy recommendation

In this category,
the University of Tokyo will make a recommendation to Monbukagakusho (the Ministry
of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) for students who have been
officially recommended by a partner university based on the interuniversity student
exchange agreement, or by a president, dean or an equivalent of a university which
has a history of significant student exchange with the University. In principle,
scholarship students selected in this category will arrive in Japan in October.
*Students selected through university recommendations
are subject to the condition that they engage in study or research activities
at the recommending university, therefore transfer to another university after
arriving in Japan is prohibited.
