Japanese Government Scholarship Students
Japanese Government Scholarship Students are foreign students who study or do research at Japanese Universities or other educational institutions at Japanese government expense (allowance). They are classified into seven types: Research Students, Undergraduate Students, Japanese Studies Students, Teacher Training Students, College of Technology Students, Special Training College Students, and Young Leaders Program (YLP) Students.
Kyoto University accepts Japanese government scholarship students of the following status.

In order to receive Japanese Government Scholarships, each student has to sign the ledger at Foreign Student Division every month. The scholarships will be paid according to this ledger. If you are outside Japan from the beginning to the end of a month, you will not receive the scholarship for that month.

Application Period
There are two ways to apply for Japanese government scholarship students: Embassy Recommendation and University Recommendation.
Important Notice: On Embassy Recommendation
Previously, Monbukagakusho Scholarship applicants were encouraged to submit pre-acquired "Letter of Acceptance" from prospective advisors. However, since 2005 application, only those who passed the preliminary selection can contact prospective advisors for "Letter of Acceptance."
