JAPANESE GOVERNMENT (MONBUKAGAKUSHO) SCHOLARSHIP










The Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Government of Japan: MEXT) offers scholarships to Australian nationals who wish to study at Japanese universities under the Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship Program as follows:



Undergraduate Category (OPEN)




  1. Tenable in principle for five years, including one year preliminary study of the Japanese language. There are opportunities for study in the humanities and social sciences. Upon completion of their courses, students will be awarded a Bachelors degree.



  2. Applicants must be from seventeen to twenty-one years old as of 1 April 2008 (born on or between 2 April 1986 and 1 April 1991). Applicants must be Australian nationals and must complete Year 12 to matriculation standard by March 2008. Applicants must also be willing to study the Japanese language, and to receive instruction in that language.



  3. Applicants will be required to take compulsory examinations in English, Mathematics, and may also choose to take an optional examination in Japanese Language on Thursday, 28 June 2007. Please note that from 2007 examinations in World History will no longer be required. There will also be a mandatory interview for short-listed applicants in August. Examinations and interviews will be conducted at the Embassy of Japan, Canberra and Consulates-General of Japan, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. Other examination sites may also be decided upon after reviewing applications. Travel expenses for the exam will be borne by applicants.



  4. Successful students will depart for Japan in April 2008.



  5. Benefits: return airfare and allowance of ¥134,000 (approx. A$1400) per month. (Subject to change)

Research Category (OPEN)




  1. Tenable for 2 years starting in April 2008 or 18 months starting in October 2008.



  2. Applicants must be Australian nationals and be graduates or final year students under 35 years of age on 1 April 2008 (born on or after 2 April 1973).



  3. There will be compulsory examinations for English and optional Japanese Language on Thursday 28 June 2007 and short listed candidates must attend interview in late July to early August. The examinations and interviews will be held in various places in Australia, but not overseas. Applicants who wish to pursue Japanese studies, such as language, linguistics, literature, history, law, or any other related subject, are expected to have an appropriate proficiency with the Japanese language. Examinations and interviews will be conducted at the Embassy of Japan, Canberra and Consulates-General of Japan, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. Other examination sites may also be decided upon after reviewing applications. Travel expenses for the exam will be borne by applicants.



  4. Benefits: return airfare and allowance of ¥170,000 (approx. A$1700) per month. (Subject to change)

Teacher Training Category (CLOSED)


Scholarship offered to foreign students who wish to conduct research on school education at Japanese universities under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program for 2007 as follows:




  1. Tenable for 18 months from October 2007 to March 2009.



  2. Academic Background: Applicants must be a graduate of a university or a teacher-training school and have worked as a teacher of an elementary or secondary educational institution or a teacher-training school in his/her home country for at least five years in total as of April 1, 2007. (In-service professors are not eligible.)



  3. Age: Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1972. Applicants must be Australian nationals.



  4. Applicants will be required to take a compulsory English examination and may also choose to take an optional Japanese Language examination in March 2007. Travel expenses for the exam will be borne by applicants.



  5. Benefits: return airfare and allowance of ¥172,000 ( approx. A$1800) per month. (Subject to change)

Japanese Studies Category (CLOSED)


Scholarship offered to foreign students who wish to receive education at Japanese universities for enhancing their Japanese language ability and understanding of Japan and Japanese culture under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program for 2007 as follows:




  1. Tenable for 1 year from October 2007.



  2. Academic Background: Applicants must be an undergraduate at a foreign (non-Japanese) university majoring in fields related to Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan.



  3. Age: Applicants must be born from April 2, 1977 to April 1, 1989. Applicants must be Australian nationals.



  4. Applicants will be required to take a compulsory examination in Japanese Language between the 21st and 23rd of March 2007. Examination will be conducted at the Embassy of Japan, Canberra and Consulates-General of Japan, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. Other examination sites may also be decided upon after reviewing applications. Travel expenses for exam will be borne by applicants.
